[Raymond Did It]
Plot:Bryce Rourke is accidentally killed in a playground scuffle. His friends blame his developmentally delayed older brother, Raymond, for the murder. Six years later, Raymond escapes from the state mental hospital to exact bloody revenge.

Cast:Lindsay Felton, Jessica Palette, Elissa Dowling, Kyle Hoskins, Jake Skiba, Steven Lee Edwards, Ty Yaeger.

My Thoughts:Crass but effective slasher film.

Review:"Raymond Did It" is a film that I recently got a chance to catch at a screening. The indie horror/slasher pic has yet to be released to theaters or dvd, and as of now...is testing the waters for it's respective following. The movie was shot on a very small budget, but manages to do some clever, interesting, and creative things with what money it does have at it's disposal. The movie follows a group of suburban kids. During a normal day of horseplay, one of them ends up getting killed.

The kids name is Bryce, and his death scene is pretty funny when you consider the absurdity of how it occurs. At any rate, once the horrible deed occurs, the culprits start looking for someone else to blame. The lead girl, Paige...who is the kinda-goth/kinda-white trash tomboy bully type...and who is the one who was ultimately responsible for accidentally murdering Bryce, pushes her friends into putting the whole thing off on Bryce's mentally handicapped and kinda slow-in-the-head brother Raymond. Thus, Raymond is then taken away to a mental hospital to serve a long sentence.

But six years later, after pretty much everyone has either gotten over or forgotten about the horrible incident six years ago...life goes on. And now things have changed for everyone. Paige is emancipated from her family, and lives with her stoner boyfriend. And the only sorta-friend Raymond ever had, a girl named Tammy...is the only one who feels any guilt over what they did to Raymond. But the one person who hasn't forgotten about it all, is Raymond. And on this day, he will make his move to escape the mental hospital...and seek bloody, violent revenge on the ones responsible for causing him to be falsely committed. For a small-budgeted movie, "Raymond Did It" manages to net an intriguing blend of talent. Including Elissa Dowling, a B-movie actress with a resume of films longer than a lot of A-film actresses.

And a well-known name in genre circles. And Lindsay Felton, who you might know from "Scream Queens" season 1. Felton plays the wobbly Tammy very well. I call the character wobbly because her loyalties and ultimately her motives are shaky at best. She has a connection with Raymond where despite his murderous rage and anger at what was done to him, he still remembers her as a "friendly"...of sorts. But down the course of the film, things begin to get a little dark with her. And her character is an interesting one to watch. She kind of knows that she has an influence over Raymond, but fears to try and pull or push him in any specific direction. She really stays hands off most of the film, which is unusual for a heroine or protagonist in a movie like this. Normally in films where the psycho killer escapes the nuthouse, and seeks out new victims, thus...creating a massive body count.

The protagonist tries with every fiber of their being, to stop them from killing. To shut them down from harming any innocent people. But Tammy intriguingly enough, declines to do this right away. And I thought that was an interesting wrinkle thrown into this well-patterned slasher film. As was the killer Raymond, played by Kyle Hoskins. Raymond is indeed a killer, persay. But he's not portrayed as evil. Legge, who wrote and directed the film...makes sure to keep Raymond focused solely as a wronged man who wants revenge on those who've wronged him specifically. Not the guy next door, or the lady down the street. But Raymond, unlike other horror film villains who go slicing and cicing anybody and everybody, has maintained his humanity to an extent. And stalks and slashes the kids responsible for getting him locked up.

He feels no guilt over this either since the kids are now teenagers, and oddly enough...have become even more cold and obnoxious with age, if that is at all possible. The movie offers up deaths that are not spectacular on a grand scope. But they certainly fit the movies overall tone and style. This is a slasher movie in the vein of "Sleepaway Camp" and it's sequels. Black humor, dark humor, deaths that are funny in nature and style, but at the same time aren't meant to be laughed at in polite society and or social situations.

The film has a high amount of camp, and ratchets up it's characters levels of obnoxiousness and mean-spiritedness...again...ala "Sleepaway Camp" and it's sequels. And in some ways, these are exactly the kind of kids that an Angela Baker kind of character wouldn't approve of either. Elissa Dowling's character in the film Paige, certainly matches Raymond as a protagonist. Raymond is the films sort of-villain, but Dowling as Paige is a great villainess herself. And her characters is so easy to dislike, that you just salivate for the moment when Raymond finally gets his hands on her.

Add to that, the fact that she seems to have learned nothing from her actions as a child, even as Tammy...her friend, dials her up to warn her of Raymond's recent escape. But what makes "Raymond Did It" really a strong indie slasher, is it's finale. The films finale blends some nice elements of drama, suspense, and plot twisting. And leaves a ton of intriguing directions for a possible sequel. "Raymond Did It" may not be the prototypical indie slasher movie with any real monetary advantagesm, but for fans of small-budget slasher films, with an 80's throwback vibe that is akin to "Sleepaway Camp", "Night Of The Demons", and films in that specific vein...you should definitely enjoy "Raymond Did It".

Positives:Good deaths. Again...they aren't on the level of a studio horror film in terms of effects, but they perfectly fit the mold of this type of horror film. A campy, slasher/revenge film with 80's throwback overtones. The characters are much more than one-dimensional, an unusual thing in films like this. Felton's character Tammy, being the most complex and interesting. The story of Raymond itself, is a nicely written one as well. Effective in it's simplicity.

Negatives:I thought the death of Bryce was somewhat strange in how it went down. It just seemed kind of out of the ordinary.

Overall:Three stars out of four.
