[The Tomb]
Plot:Successful writer and scholar Jonathan Merrick falls under the spell of the irresistible, bewitchingly beautiful Ligeia. She's fighting a fatal illness and she will stop at nothing to defeat death, her one true enemy. She steals other people's souls and on her quest to immortality she tricks Jonathan into supporting her work, breaking him apart from his fiancé Rowena and pulling him into her dark, mysterious world. They settle down in an old manor by the Black Sea where Ligeia's everlasting presence slowly drives Jonathan to madness.

My Thoughts:No...not really.
Review:"The Tomb", aka "Ligeia"...was released this past fall with FANGORIA'S frightfest slate. The movie, which stars Wes Bentley, Kaitlin Doubleday, and Sofya Skya...follows a college professor named Jonathan. Jonathan has the usual college professor lifestyle. He works at a great U, has a hot girlfriend, and for the most part is pretty well paid. In addition to his regular salary, he also has other money to fall back on. But things soon change for him when he meets a mysterious, gothic beauty named Ligeia...a Russian scientist who has been performing strange experiments on random people in secret. Her goal?
To find a way to cheat death once and for all. But to continue her research, she needs funding. Which is where Jonathan comes in. And in order to get him to fund her work, and get closer to her...she must break him away from his current girlfriend, Rowena. Will Rowena be able to save Jonathan before Ligeia gets her hooks too deep into him? "The Tomb" is a pseudo-remake of the 1964 Edgar Allen Poe tale, "The Tomb Of Ligeia". It pretty much fails in every aspect of reaching that films overall value. And overall, is very unimpressive.
The movie first off stars Wes Bentley. Who while he's not stranger to this genre (Ghost Rider, Soul Survivors), has never been good enough to carry a film. Even as Blackheart, a cool villain look and tone wise, Bentley did only an average job at best imo. In "The Tomb"...his performance is boring and uninspired for the most part. And he gets very little help, if any...from his supporting cast. Which is filled with newcomers mostly, and a grizzled Michael Madsen. Who always seems to manage to find his way into every indie horror film on the planet.
Madsen plays Rowena's father, who doesn't do much other than grunt a few lines of support to his daughter every now and then. But beyond that, he isn't seen much in this movie. And that's either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on who you are. But the film itself doesn't measure up to the 1964 movie, slightly of the same name. Not that "The Tomb Of Ligeia" was a terrific horror movie to begin with. It was a 2-and-a-half-starrer at best in my eyes. But the remake is a complete disaster because the story gets stale quick, and it plays out in very typical and predictable fashion.
We know Ligeia is creepy, dangerous, strange, and odd. And not in a charming kind of way. yet Jonathan...a supposed professor, can't even see it before it's too late. We also know Ligeia is gonna work some sort of black magic mojo on him eventually, which she does. And the film goes on and on and on from there. Figuring out how this movie plays out and will play out, is about as easy as throwing a singular dart at a 500-foot-tall dartboard. And that's what ruins the fun of the movie. I mean okay, having seen the original...you know how the remake will play out atleast 40%. And where it will take it's base elements from.
But the other 60% of the movie needs to be crafted well enough to where you are left in the dark, or surprised about a couple of the things that occur within the process of this dark and gothic story. Things even get really bad when the cheesy Romanian-esque castle and foggy mansion grounds make an appearance. I mean sure, it all looked a lot better than it looks in most of the new Full Moon movies...but still, why even bother? How does this help the movie at all?
Especially because by that time, the film has dug itself such a huge hole that it'd be a miracle if it could escape. Skya as Bentley's lover/nemesis/tormentor in the film isn't much better either. Her accent is average, but her performance is dry and boring. And Doubleday as Rowena, is bubbly at times, but doesn't get enough screentime to negate the boring, droll, and uninspired performance of Skya as Ligeia. The films ending just hammers in the final nail in the coffin, as it ends on THE most cheesy and cartoonish note ever.
Neither the remake nor the original really took themselves extremely seriously, but atleast I could take the original "TOL" seriously if I chose to do so as a viewer. The remake however? Is a completely joke of a movie, which is absolutely impossible to even take one iota seriously.
Positives:The directing was good, captured the gothic and dark overtones of the film very well.
Negatives:Not very good performances all around, the script and story get bogged down by making no real moves or taking no real risks. Terrible ending.
Overall:One star our of four.
